Nivola sviluppa già dagli anni Cinquanta una peculiare tecnica di graffito ad affresco: preparata la superficie con un impasto di cemento scuro, un sottile strato di intonaco bianco viene sovrapposto e poi rapidamente inciso - “a fresco” appunto - per fare emergere la preparazione scura sottostante.

Nel Richard Bolling Federal Building, interpretando il tema dei costruttori di Léger (lavoratori sui ponteggi di un edificio in costruzione) con le sue consuete figure geometriche e curvilinee, Nivola mette in scena un animato cantiere. L’opera sarà poi realizzata con la tecnica del sandcast.

Starting in the Fifties, Nivola develops a particular technique for frescos and graffiti: the surface is prepared with a base of dark cement, then coated with a layer of white mortar on which, before drying, a line drawing is engraved by carving through to reach the darker undercoating. In the Richard Bolling Federal Building, inspired the builders theme of Léger (workers on the scaffolds of a building under construction) with his usual geometrical and curvilinear figures, Nivola depicts a lively construction yard. The artwork will be later made with the sand-casting technique.
