Sculture per il monumento funebre alla madre e al fratello, Orani 1958

Il monumento è composto da tre placche scolpite, poggiate su tozze colonne; accanto ad esse sono infissi su steli metallici due ritratti della madre (intenta a impastare il pane, simbolo di nutrimento e vita) e del fratello (con la casacca da muratore in spalla). Le piccole dimensioni dei ritratti puntano a evitare ogni rischio di retorica. Intorno alle sculture l’artista pianta del grano, disponendo che venga tagliato e rimanga sul posto come parte del monumento, con una probabile allusione all’idea pagana della morte e resurrezione.

Sculptures for the memorial to his mother and brother, Orani 1958

The memorial is composed of three sculpted plaques resting on short columns. Next to them, on metal poles, stand two small portraits: one of his mother holding bread dough, a symbol of nourishment and life; the other of his brother with mason’s jacket over his shoulder. The small dimension of the portraits aims at avoiding any risk of rethoric. Around the sculptures the artist plants wheat, instructing that, once grown and cut, it should remain there as part of the monument, a possible reference to the pagan idea of death and resurrection.
