Nivola comincio a eseguire nei primi anni Cinquanta una serie di figure in lamiera ritagliata, Gli Antenati, con una tecnica in parte suggerita dalla scultura del suo amico Alexander Calder. la grande figura qui esposta fu creata in Sardegna durante un viaggio nel 1952. L'artista tornò a più riprese sul tema, realizzando tra l'altro nel 1957-58 un gruppo di figure come decorazione di un grande magazzino, il Carr's Department Store a West Orange, New Jersey. Collocate sulla facciata, le lamiere erano associate da Nivola al rumore e all'animazione del commercio e della vita moderna.

In the early Fifties Nivola, using a technique partly ìnspired by the work of his friend Alexander Calder, begins making a series of figures cut-out in sheet metal entitled The Ancestors. The great figure on display here was made during a stay in Sardinia in 1952. The artist repeatedly returned to the theme, creating among others a group of figures to decorate the facade of the Carr's Department Store in West Orange, New Jersey in 1957-58. Nivola related the sheet metal figures to the noise and commotion of commerce and modem life.
