Modello per il Monumento alla Brigata “Sassari”, 1962

Il concorso per il monumento alla Brigata “Sassari”, indetto per celebrare il corpo militare interamente composto di soldati sardi, celebre per il suo eroismo nella prima guerra mondiale, dà a Nivola l’opportunità di studiare un complesso intervento a scala ambientale che avrebbe fuso architettura e scultura. Visto dall’alto il monumento avrebbe avuto la forma di un corpo umano disteso, ma al tempo stesso avrebbe ricordato il profilo della Sardegna; entrando, il visitatore si sarebbe inoltrato in un percorso labirintico punteggiato di statue, all’interno di camminamenti simili a trincee dai muri coperti di rilievi.

A competition in 1959 for a memorial to the “Sassari” Brigade, commemorating the highly decorated unit of Sardinian soldiers in the Italian army during the Great War, gives Nivola the opportunity to study a complex intervention on an environmental scale fusing architecture and sculpture. Seen from above, the monument would have had the shape of an outstretched human body, at the same time it would have recalled the profile of Sardinia. A visitor would pass through a maze filled with statues inside paths resembling trenches with walls covered with reliefs.
