Nivola e Richard Stein presentano il progetto al concorso per un memoriale alla Battaglia di Bataan-Corregidor, evento chiave della seconda guerra mondiale nel Pacifico. Il progetto, in anticipo di una ventina d'anni sulla Land Art, prevede di trasformare in scultura l'intera isola di Corregidor: intorno a un'architettura centrale dovevano diramarsi sentieri e tunnel che tagliavano il terreno come ferite aperte a denunciare la violenza della guerra. Non senza ironia, artista e architetto avevano previsto che a realizzare l'opera fosse lo stesso esercito, per mezzo dei bombardamenti.

This project was submitted by Nivola and Richard Stein in a competition to design a memorial for the Battle of Bataan-Corregidor, key event of World War Il in the Pacific. The project, predating by decades the advent of Land Art, proposed transforming the entire island of Corregidor into a sculpture: around a central architecture, paths and tunnels would spread cutting the soil like open wounds, denouncing the violence of war. Not without irony, artist and architect intended the US army itself to realise the project by bombing the site.
