In occasione del concorso per il memoriale dedicato a Roosevelt, Nivola riflette sulla forma e il significato della bandiera americana. Le strisce sono muri che creano corridoi in cui i visitatori possono camminare come i migranti nella “terra delle opportunità”, verso un gruppo di alte colonne - le stelle dei cinquanta stati americani. Negli anni Ottanta Nivola torna sul progetto: ora lo pensa in marmo e vi aggiunge, tra le colonne, una serie di statue di americani illustri. Lo spirito anarchico di Nivola e la coscienza delle contraddizioni della società dei consumi non impedivano all’artista di pensarsi come uno dei tanti emigranti che avevano vissuto il “sogno americano”.

In occasion of the competition for a memorial dedicated to Roosevelt, Nivola reflects on the form and meaning of the American flag. The stripes are walls creating corridors through which visitors would walk, flowing as if in a “land of opportunity”, toward a cluster of columns—the stars of the fifty states.

In the 1980s Nivola returns to the project, now imagining it built in marble, and adding to it a series of statutes of illustrious figures in American history. The anarchic spirit of Nivola and his awareness of the contradictions of consumerist society do not prevent the artist from picturing himself as one of the many migrants who had lived the “American dream”.
